Review: Hostel: Part III (2011, dir. Scott Spiegel)

Oh boy. I have to admit, were the horror options on Irish netflix not paltry, I would have chosen something else to watch on a Friday night, but I was stuck with this. It’s not good. I regret watching the third installment of the Hostel franchise.

This movie is set not in Slovakia, but in Las Vegas, where four friends (who are all assholes in their own ways and seem to genuinely hate each other), set out on  a drunken weekend for Scott’s (Brian Hallisay) bachelor party. On the trip with Scott is his best man, Carter (Kip Pardue), overgrown frat boy Mike (Skyler Stone), and the crippled and bitter Justin (John Hensley). There is gambling and strippers and alcohol and then, of course, it all begins to go south for the group of friends.

This time, the violence feels very removed, and it’s terrible for the movie. Instead of businessmen paying to torture and kill our characters, the businessmen are paying to watch and bet on how long it takes for them to die. It takes away the dirty, gritty atmosphere of the first two films, and replaces it with a glitzy, dark, sexy vibe that just does not work. Also, if there’s anyone who’s seen this movie and would care to explain to me what the hell was up with Justin’s death, that’d be great.

There’s a decent, but completely expected, twist in the movie, and at the end, which is fun but really predictable and cringey. If you’re interested in torture porn, please steer clear of this movie and go for something with a little bit more substance.
