Review: The Hunt (2006, dir. Fritz Kiersch)

Don’t see this movie. It’s movies like The Hunt that make me wish I didn’t use superlatives as often as I do, so I could accurately state how much I hated this movie. It was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, and a complete waste of time.

Now that my little outburst is over with, let me explain what exactly is wrong with it. (Hint: the answer is everything.) Like a lot of horror junkies I’ve spoken with, I love found footage movies. They’re the only style of filmmaking that is tailor made for the horror genre, so we barely have any competition in the industry. It’s awesome. But unfortunately, it’s also a genre with plenty of movies that have been butchered. The Hunt is one of them. Not only the story lets down the found footage genre, but the filmmaking splits between shaky hand held cameras and traditional filmmaking, leaving you wondering….was it even supposed to be a found footage movie?

In the movie, a man takes his stepson and his cameraman friend into the woods to shoot a “how to” movie about deer hunting. The cameraman is a mean alcoholic, and….that’s pretty much the plot. They get lost, they come across some strange government buildings, there are a few subplots involving investors that aren’t relevant and never come back into play, and everything disintegrates. I won’t even talk about the ending, because it was one of the worst movie endings I’ve ever seen.

I can’t recommend steering clear of this movie strongly enough. Don’t waste your time, trust me.

2/10.

  1. While the review above is completely accurate; the men are handsome, the kid is cool, and the forest is scary. Plus the premise, that there are secret, scary fenced and restricted areas guarding God Knows What, is fun to ponder.
And then, there’s that alluring postscript in the credits about “The Caspar (sp) Lease”. Oooohh, more mystery!

    I’d watch the serial…
